Question

12) (30 points) A sample of basalt was age dated using the dating system in 1969 using ? 1.47x10-11 and the age was determined to be 179 MA. Given that 87Rb/86Sr 989 and 87Sr/86Sr 3.309: a) Determine the initial (7Sr/86Sr), and hypothesize if this erupted Rb/Sr through thick or thin crust. 0.002631 b) Recalculate the age using the accepted te the age using, the accepted modern values for the decay constant.1 4 o 0.517 c) What is the error between the original age date, recalculated age date. d) Given that the rock is basalt, can you suggest an age dating system that might be better for determining an age? Pota ssiur Argan clading

Explanation / Answer

a. Sr87/86sr =sr87/sr86 ( intial) + 87Rb/86rb[e1.47*10^-11*179*10^6-1)

all the values are given except the sr87/sr86 (initial) value so on solving we will get the answer as 0.70322.

b. taking lambda as 1.42*10-11 we recalculate the same equation we get the values as 0.7919623.

c.to find error we have to subtract and then divide the values and multiply with 100,this is done below

0.7919623-0.70322 /0.7919623 = 0.126138 *100 = 12%

d. the best suitable method is samarium - nyodium method commonly called as sm-nd method.

actually i wanted to upload the whole answer in image format but chegg doesnot allow to upload greater than 2mb file.so i could not.

just put the values in equation you will get all the values.
