Activity 4.4B number 7 a - e in the book : Applications and investigations in earth space science 8th edition

Use fractional scales on the Angelica topographic map and Portage, Montana, map to answer qstions

a. what is the fractional sclae for the Angelica map

b. How does this compare to the fractional scale for the portage, Montana map?

c what distance in miles does 1 inch represent on each map

Angelica, New York, map Miles

Portage, Montana map Miles

d. Does the Angelica map cover more or less area than Portage map?

e. Explain why the Angelica map lacks numbered sections that we associate with the Public Lnd Survey system

Explanation / Answer

a) the fractional scale of the tropographical map of the Angelica map is 1:24000 miles. this means that the fraction for the scale of this map is 1/24000 times the actual area covered by the map in miles.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

b) to compare this above scale of the angelica map with the portage montana map we need to first know the scale of the portage motana map. as we have already determined the scale of the map of the angelica map so to compare we need just the scale of the portage map.

and the scale of the portage map is 1:62500 miles. it mean that the fraction of the portage montana map is 1/62500 times the actual area coverage in miles.

now if we compare both the map then we can find it easily that the angelica map is 1/24000 and the portage montana map is 1/62500. so in this comparison we found that the scale used in the angelica map is greater than that of the portage montana map. means that the map accuracy is high for portage montana map as it have small value which will measure more effectively.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

c) as already mentioned that for the case of the angelica map it is having the scale of 1/24000 miles means that if we convert it into scale of inch then for the 1 inch it will represent 24000 miles.

so 1 inch= 24000 miles

similarly for the case of the portage montana map it is 1/62500

so 1 inch = 62500 miles

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

d) it is very simple and logical to determine that which map cover the greater distance. as from the above concept we can see this that for angelica map 1 inch represnt 24000 miles on the other hand for the case of portage map it represent 1 inch equal to 62500 miles. so it is greater for the case of portage montana map.

thus Angelica map cover less area than Portage map.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

e) it is due to it geological structure and the geography of the location. we can say this that the angelica map has the less number of section because the division is take place in order to make it sustainable but due to ceratin geographical factors some areas are get divided in such a manner which make it less number of sections.
