Question

9. Activated Carbon has been used for Advance Water Treatment. Early uses of carbon were reported for water filtration and for sugar solution purification. Their ability to remove a large variety of compounds from contaminated water has led to its increased uses. Recent changes in water discharge standards, regarding toxic pollutants, have placed additional emphasis on this technology. Please, describe the process on how to produce activated carbon and on the mechanism to remove contaminants in water.

Explanation / Answer

Activated carbon is produced from the carbanaceous wood, bamboo, coconut husk etc, through carbonization. it is the process of conversion of carbon rich material in to pure carbon by heating and then it is activated through the process of oxidation by exposing to the oxidizing atmosphere at high temperature.

activated carbon filters are granular, small fragments of carbon which have high porosity. due to the small size these pieces will have a large surface area, and this increase the efficiency of adsorbing contaminants and other very small particles from water. when the contaminated water pass through it these contaminants stick on this carbon and we will get clear pure water.
