Question

Hi, can someone please hep me with the following problem? I postedit previously and got some responses. But I feel like the solutionisn't just simply looking at the table for the higher percentage. Ithink maybe a histogram is involved? I'm not sure. Can someoneplease help me? Thank you!

One study of grand juries in Alameda County, California. Here arethe results for age and county-wide percentage. (Only people overthe age of 21 were considered.)

Age                      County-Wide Percentage
21 to30                             22
31 to50                             43
51 to60                             16
61 to90                             19
Total                                  100

a) Are there more grand juries at age 40 or 54?Explain.

b) In what ages is the highest percentage?Explain.

Explanation / Answer

a) This question is to find the interval with the highestdensity. Density is height. Percent is area. In the 2nd interval, 31-50, the width is 20, area = 43%, andso the height is 43%/20 = 2.15% per year In the 3rd interval, 51-60, the width is 10, area = 16%, andso the height is 16%/20 = 0.8% per year So there are morejuries at age 49 than at age 54. b) The question is ambiguous. If you're asking which intervalhas the highest percentage, the answer is 31-50. If the question isasking which age unit has the largest percentage, it would be theage interval with the largest density. The answer to that would beage 21-30. The density is 22%/10 = 2.2% per year. Hope this helps, Mike
