Question
Waldo, Wendy, Wilma, and Wolther are participating the their ownversion of the great race which has the objective of returning tothe clubhouse with a unique souvenir from each of 45 differentcountries scattered about the globe. The rules are that they canreenter a country on their list as often as they like and that theycannot go to or through any country not on the list. Other thanthat, their movements should be considered random.(a) While the race is on, what is the total number of possibilitiesfor the joint location of Waldo, Wendy, Wilma, and Wolther?
(b) What is the disorder associated with the wandering of thequartet of friends?
(c) What is the probability that none of the four friends will bein Ukraine (a country on their list) at the same time?
(d) What is the probability of all four friends being in the samecountry (any on the list) at the same time?
Explanation / Answer
(a) For the joint location, there are 45 different countries thateach person might be in at any one time. So, there are 45^4 different possibilites, or 4100625possibilities. (b) I'm not quite sure what this part of the question wants, butthe wanderings should be completely disordered. (c)probability = (44/45)^4 = .914 because there are 44 countries for each friend to inhabit and notbe in Ukraine; we multiply each independent probability (d)probability = 1 * (1/45)^3 = 1.097e-5 = .00001097 because the first person's location is irrelevant we consider thatprobability to be 1. then the probability of each of the otherpeople being in the same country is 1/45. hope this helps. please rate my answer. hp
