Question

Question 6 Marks: 1 In a study that I conducted we were interestedto find out whether the middle school teachers' knowledge ofAmerican History depended on the number of American History classesthat they took in college. For a sample of 200 teachers we foundthe following data:

S^2 for the variance on knowledge of American History = 144
r = correlation between knowledge of Amercian History and thenumber of courses in this area = 0.60

What is the value for variance of error (S^2 e) and how do youinterpret 1 - r^2? Choose one answer. A. variance oferror is equal to 64 and 64% of the variance in knowledge ofAmerican History can be explained by the number of courses thatteachers took in American History. B. variance oferror is equal to 92 and 64% of the variance in the number ofcourses taken in Americah history can be explained by the teacher'sknowledge of American History. C. variance oferror is equal to 64 and 64% of the variance of the error can beexplained by the number of courses taken in AmericanHistory. D. variance oferror is equal to 92 and 64% of the variance in knowledge ofAmerican History is due to factors other than the number of coursesthat the teachers took in this area. Explanation / Answer

Answer from other thread, in case you check there first... r^2 = 1 - SSE / SST r^2 * SST = SST - SSE SSE = SST * (1-r^2) SSE = 144 * (1 - .6^2) = 92.16 1-.6^2 = .64 Since r^2 describes what percent of the variance in y is explainedby the variance in x, 1-r^2 describes what percent of the variancein y is NOT explained by the variance in x. Thus, the answer is C.
