So, the primary effect of emission of carbon dioxide is, it holds more heat in the atmosphere, resulting in warmer climate. And warm climate have different effects on other climatic parameters, like winds, surface temperature, precipitation.
To successfully combat climate change, individuals will need to switch from obtaining energy primarily from fossil fuels to using a variety of clean energy source, as you have already mentioned. Among these variety of source, easily available clean energy sources are, Solar energy, Wind energy which an individual person is able to make a use of it. On large sclae, we could use those clean energy sources as well. Apart from those, use of nuclear energy, tidal energy is also possible on large scale.
