9.1) We use ?=0.01 when we want great precision. Example while testing pharmaceuticals, we want to make sure that there is no danger to patient's health, so we use ?=0.01 . This ensures us 99% confidence that the medicine we are using does not have any side effects and is effective. However using such a small ? requires greater precision on the part of the experimenter which makes the experiment costly. Hence in other experiments like manufacturing , we use ?=0.05.
9.2) The two types of error in hypothesis testing are
(a) Type 1 error- This type of error occurs when we reject the null hypothesis H0 , when it is infact true; i.e it is the probability of rejecting H0 when it is true. It is denoted by ?.
(b) Type 2 error- It is the probability of accepting the null hypothesis H0 when it is false. This type of error occurs when the null hypothesis is actually false, but was accepted as true by the testing. It is denoted by ?.
