Introduction Objective 1Objective 2 objective 3 Objective 3: Determine the Sample Size Necessary for Estimating a Population Proportion within a Specified Margin of Error 0 of 1 Point i Question Help | * A researcher wishes to estimate the percentage of adults who support abolishing the penny. What size sample should be obtained if he wishes the estimate to be within 4 percentage points with 95% confidence if (a) he uses a previous estimate of 25%? (b) he does not use any prior estimates? (a) n = (Round up to the nearest integer.) 2 Enter your answer in the answer box and then click Check Answer

Explanation / Answer

Solution :

Given that Margin of error E = 0.04,

For 95% confidence interval , Z = 1.96

(a) previous estimate p = 0.25 , q = 1-p = 0.75

n = p*q*(Z/E)^2

= 0.25*0.75*(1.96/0.04)^2

= 450 (nearest number)

(b) he does not use any prior estimate then p = 0.5 , q = 0.5

n = p*q*(Z/E)^2

= 0.5*0.5*(1.96/0.04)^2

= 600 (nearest number)
