Astronomy- Please answer # 10

152 ACTIVITY 30Habitable Worlds 9. The extrasolar planets listed in Tables 30.1 and 30.2 of this activity were selected because of their low orbital eccentricities and their positions within the habitable zones of their respec- tive stars. Which one of the four extrasolar planets that you listed above is most like Earth? In what ways is it different? 10. Earth's seasons and weather are not strongly affected by our orbital eccentricity. Which one of these extrasolar planets probably experiences the largest range in temperatures based on its orbit? How would it be affected and why? 11. Most of these extrasolar planets are probably gaseous, especially those close to Jupiter's mass or larger. If all of these extrasolar planets were to have at least one moon with a solid surface, which extrasolar planet's moon would you choose to visit or live on? Explain your decision. 12. Summarize what it would be like to live on either an extrasolar planet or a moon of an extrasolar planet that you concluded would be most habitable. Use the information about its distance from its star, its orbit, its mass and radius (if estimated), and its probable composi- tion, stating in your description whether it is a gaseous or terrestrial planet

Explanation / Answer

Due to the small orbital eccentricity (only 1.7%) of the earth there is small difference in the upper and lower temperature.

Eccentricity is the key factor for the higher and lower range of the temperature. Higher eccentricity means large difference between major and minor axis of the orbit, thus palnet coming nearer to the sun will have high temperature and planet going far away from the sun will have lower temperature.

HD183263 b with eccentricity 0.36 will experience the highest difference between the higher and lower temperature.
