Question
5. The Antarctic continent is encircled by the circumpolar westerly winds. Ignoring the effects of salinity, do you expect this to lead to upwelling or downwelling (sinking) of the ocean water near the Antarctic coastline? Explain your answer 6. Recalling the pattern of global ocean circulation from lectures, where is the oldest ocean deep water found on probably Earth, and why? By "old" water, I mean water that has not been in contact with the atmosphere for some time. 7. Which way does a low pressure storm circulate in the Southern Hemisphere? counterclockwise? Clockwise orExplanation / Answer
Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is the current on Earth which is driven by winds and is the only current that connects the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. It is driven by strong westerly winds which creates some of the roughest seas in the world. It is at the Antarctic Convergence, where the cold Antarctic waters meet the warmer waters of the subantarctic which creats a zone of upwelling nutrients. It also sees high levels of phytoplankton too like fish, whales, seals, penguins, albatrosses, and a wealth of other species.
