I need help answering the following questions...

71. What two things combined to make the early Earth extremely hot? 2 What s meant by the iron catastrophe" asib thing or a good thing? Explain 3. How do scientists think the moon formed? 4. Why are small pieces of the mineral zircon so important for Earth scientists? Hint: consider their age. 5. Based on the oxygen isotopes found within them, what temperature do the zircon crystals indicate for the rocks at the time? 6. Where could the water that fills our ocean basins h ave come from? Give two possible sources. Which do you think is more likely?

Explanation / Answer

1) As per the theories it is believed that during the formation of moon was formed, the impact or accretion of a Mars-size object with or by the proto-earth had taken place which liberated a large amount of heat being stored by the early earth.

2)  It is believed that earth & moon are formed at same time but moon is differeent from earth as it lacks core. To explain this difference a new theory came intto existence which says that iron catastrophe was a process in which heavy iron and nickel began to sink through the lighter materials of the proto-Earth into the core. It is a good thing as the iron catastrophe is the root of the Earth's geomagnetic field which protects it from solar winds and allows liquid water to exist on its surface.

3) The giant impact hypothesis states that when a giant Mars-sized body violently collided into a still-molten Earth, a piece of molten rock and metal break off which is now called moon.

4) Small pieces of Zircon are important to the scientist because it can hold the greatest insight into various fundamental questions of it's origin, because it can contain a record of some of the earliest history of the Earth. Zircon is used for radioactive dating to determine the age & ultimately reveal the mystery of the origin of earth.
