To investigate the claim formally, you carry out a hypothesis test this time by constructing a bootstrap confidence interval 1. Set up the null and alternative hypotheses. Define the notation(s) clearly. [1 mark] Using StatKey or other appropriate software, produce a dotplot of the bootstrap distribution (with at least 5,000 bootstrap samples) of the appropriate sample 2. statistic. Comment on its shape (e.g., central location, degree of symmetry). [l mark] 3. With reference to the bootstrap distribution in question 8, construct two 95% bootstrap confidence intervals, one using the percentile method and another one based on normal distributions. What can you conclude about Ben's claim at a 5% significance level? [1 mark] 4. Do you think men and women are paid differently because of the gender difference? Explain. [1 mark]

Explanation / Answer

go to online statkey website and

click Test for difference in means

create data in "fem, wage" comma seperated for each observation for all the 100 observations.

click edit data and paste the 100 observations.

click generate 1000 samples 5 times to generate 5000 bootstrap samples.

choose two tail checkbox.

H0: Null hypothesis

mu 1 (fem wage) = mu 2 (male wage)

H1: Alternate hypothesis

mu 1 != mu2

Below is the dotplot of the difference in the means.

It's shape is almost normal.

The central location is mean being 0.0013

Goto confidence intervals -- Difference in means (in statkey)

You will get the result of creating 5000 bootstrap samples of the 100 observations pasted.

The difference in means is -2.371

95% CI are- (3.257,-1.151)

To find the CI using normal distribution method, go to nomal distributions (in statkey) and enter -2.371 as mean and 0.464 as standard deviation. Click two tail.

95% CI are (-3.257,-1.451)

t-stat = diff in means/ std error = -4.77

p-value for this is less than 0.0001 and hence reject null hypothesis.

Therefore the wages are not equal for females and males and are paid differently
