Question

Look at the responses to the following survey items that describe how stressful consumers believed a Christmas shopping trip was using a ten-point scale ranging from 1 (= no stress at all) to 10 (= extremely stressful):

How stressful was finding a place to park? -9

How stressful was the checkout procedure?-5

How stressful was trying to find exactly the right product?-4

How stressful was finding a store employee?-6

What would be the stress score for this respondent based on a summated scale score?

What would be the stress score for this respondent based on an average composite scale score?

Do any items need to be reverse-coded? Why or why not?

How could the concept of split-half reliability be applied using a sample of 100 respondents who gave answers to these four questions?

Explanation / Answer

Summated scale score = 9 + 5 + 4 + 6 = 24 Average composite scale score = (9 + 5 + 4 + 6)/4 = 24/4 = 6 I think finding exactly the right product should be reverse-coded as it is difficult to locate an exact product inside a mall or store. so, it should be reverse-coded. Split-half reliability is to divide the test into two halves and compare the results. So, here we can divide the 4 questions into 2-2 and then both the parts can be given to 100 respondents at the same time. The scores from both parts are correlated. A reliable test will have high correlation, indicating that a respondent would perform equally well (or as poorly) on both halves of the test.
