Question
In smurfs, tall (T) is dominant to dwarf (t), blue (B) isdominant to pink (b) and happy (H) is dominant to sad (h). Tall, blue, sad females were mated to dwarf, blue, happy males. Theprogeny generation consisted of 74 tall blue happy, 69 dwarf bluehappy, 24 dwarf pink happy and 22 tall pink happy. Fill in thespaces with the genotypes of the parents. Be sure to write yourgenotypes with the genes in the order height, then color, then moodand do not put any spaces in your genotype so that your answer canbe scored correctly. The genotype of the female parent in this cross is ______
The genotype of the male parent in this cross is______ My answers for both of them was TtBbHH...but it said that theywere both wrong? Please help. I will rate! Explanation / Answer
The question doesn't list this specifically, but I am assuming thateach of the traits listed are independent, meaning they allsegregate into progeny randomly. This means that you can calculatethe genotypes of each trait separately, as I do below. Height: Mothers are tall, so their genotype is T_, where _ marks somethingstill unknown. Fathers are short, so their genotype has to be tt to have therecessive trait. The children are half tall (74+22 = 96) and half dwarf (69+24=93).In order for any progeny to be dwarf, they have to get a t from thefather and a t from the mother. Thus, the mother has to be Tt. (Amother with genotype TT would produce only tall progeny.) You cansee this for yourself if you draw a Punnett square. Color: Both parents are blue, so their genotypes are B_. Again you can do a Punnett square to find that, in order to get a25% pink and 75% blue progeny, both parents must be Bb. So you werecorrect on this part. Mood: Sad females means that they must be hh, in order to have therecessive phenotype. Happy males are H_, but since all the progeny are happy, thefathers must be HH. Thus, the final genotypes for mothers are: TtBbhh And for fathers, it is: ttBbHH
