BIO STATS QUESTION pls help ):

(1) Construct and interpret a 95% confidence interval on the population mean, , for the following data: xbar = 12.75, s2 = 3.17, n = 24.
(2) A student examined the foraging behavior of sturgeon under two different temperature regimes. She recorded the number of foraging bouts as an indication of foraging activity. Before performing a test for differences in foraging activity under these two temperature regimes, she wanted to determine if her data met the assumption of normality. How should she determine if her data are normally distributed? What would she do if her data were not normally distributed?

Explanation / Answer

(1) Construct and interpret a 95% confidence interval on the population mean, , for the following data: xbar = 12.75, s2 = 3.17, n = 24.

we know that the confidence interval is given as

Mean +- z*SD/sqrt(n) , where z multiplier for 95% CI is 1.96 , putting the given values in the equation and solving for + and - signs

12.75+- 1.96*3.17/sqrt(24) , we get

12.75- 1.96*3.17/sqrt(24) = 11.48

12.75+ 1.96*3.17/sqrt(24) = 14.01

interpretation : we are 95% confident that the true mean lies in the range 11.48 , 14.01
