Question

rad/s EXERCISE HINTS: GETTING STARTED I I'M STUCK A Ferris wheel turns at a constant 195.0 revolutions per hour. (a) Express this rate of rotation in units of radians per second. rad/s (b) If the wheel has a radius of 11.0 m, what arc length does a passenger trace out during a ride lasting 5.05 min? (c) If the wheel then slows to rest in 9.56 s while making a quarter turn, calculate the magnitude of its average angular speed during that time. rad/s Submit Answer Save Progress Submit Assignment Save Assignment

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

a) 1 hour = 3600 s
1 revolution = 2pi radians
1revolution/hour = (2*pi)/(3600) rad/s
195 revolution/hour = 195*(2pi/3600) = 0.340 rad/s

b) Linear speed = v = R*w = 11*0.340 = 3.74 m

length of the arc = distance travelled = v*t = 3.74*5.05*60 = 1133.22 m

c) Total angular displacement = pi/2

time = t = 9.56 s

angular speed = pi/2t = pi/(2*9.56) = 0.164 rads/s
