Application Problems 11. (9 pts) A manufacturer of graphing calculators has determined that 10,000 calculators per week will be sold at a price of S95 per calculator. At a price of $90 per calculator, it is estimated that 12,000 calculators will be sold per week (a) Determine a linear function that produces the number of calculators N(x) that will be sold per week at a given unit price x. (b) Use your model to predict the number of calculators per week that will be sold at a price of S75 per calculator Page: 4 of 5 Words: 456 O Type here to search 51/201854Explanation / Answer
11.(a). Let the required linear function be N(x) = mx+c, where m is the slope, x is the unit price, N(x) is the no. of graphing calculators sold per week and c is the y-intercept. Then m = (12000-10000)/(90-95) = -2000/5 = -400. Then, N(x) = -400x +c.Further, on substituting x = 90 and N(x) = 12000 in this equation, we get 12000 = -400*90 +c or, c = 12000+36000 = 48000. Hence, the required linear function is N(x) = -400x+48000.
(b). When x = 75, we have N(75) = -400*75+48000 = -30000+48000 = 18000. Thus, 18000 graphing calculators will be sold per week if the unit price is $ 75.
