Question

Astronomy Ranking Task: The Seasons Description: In the figures (A-E) bedow parald beans of sunlight illuminate globes tilted at various angles Like the Earth, the globes rotate so that exch location (indicated by an X) on each globe is sometimes in sunlight and sometimes in darkness Assume that the globes make onefull globe rotation every 24 hours and that the distance of axch"X" above the equator is the same on eich A: Tilt-45 C: Tilt-23 D: Tilt-90 E: Tilt-23 A. Ranking Instructions Rank the time (from longest to shortest) that exch location spends in daylight during the 24 hour rotation period. Ranking Order: Longest time 12345 Or, the time spent in daylight for each location is the same Shortest time (indicate with check mark). Carefully explain your resoning for ranking this way: B. Ranking Instructions Imagine that you placed identical glasses of water at each location indicated by r'X" for globes A-E. Rak the highest temperature (from colet to hotet) a glass of water would reach during a 24 hour period at each location Ranking Order: Coolet 1--2-_a_-4 thentempedured each gs d wsthe sameindicade with check mark). Carefully explain your resoning for ranking this way (indicate with check mark).

Explanation / Answer

Queation A:

Longest to shortest:

1. E (Tilt 23 deg) 2. B (Tilt 0 deg) 3. C (Tilt 23 deg) 4. A (Tilt 45 deg) 5. D (Tilt 90 deg)

The time spent for the point X in daytime will be maximum in case E because point X lies in northern hemisphere & planet is tilted towards sun. Afterwards, as the tilt of northern hemisphere will decrease towards the sun the daytime will also decrease. In case of B tilt towards the sun get decreased so daytime will decrease from the previous case.

Afterwards the tilt of the planet started in opposite direction of the sun so as the tilt will increase in opposite direction the day time will decrease. So the next case will be C (Tilt 23 deg opposite direction to sun) and then A (Tilt 45 deg opposite direction to sun) & finally D (Tilt 90 deg opposite direction to sun).

Question B:

Ranking Order from Coolest to Hottest:

1. D (Tilt 90 deg) 2. A (Tilt 45 deg) 3. C (Tilt 23 deg) 4. B (Tilt 0 deg) 5. E (Tilt 23 deg)

The temperature variation on the surface of the earth will be directly proportional to the the amount of heat it gets from the sun or indirectly we can say "Daytime". This means longer the daytime more will be the temperature of water during the coarse of 24 hours. So, the order will be as mentioned above.
