Question

Which of the following is a way in which the increased amount of water content in slope materials affects slope stability? (Choose all that apply)

acts as a lubricant

increases the weight

decreases the pore pressure

provides moisture for vegetation

acts as a cohesive

deprives moisture for vegetation

acts as a cohesive

increases the pore pressure

Explanation / Answer

The increase in the concentration of water that is present in the slope material will cause the increase in weight and thus can cause slope failure as the pore spaces inside the material which was previously filled by air is now filled by water which have more density then air apart from this it also acts a lubricant specially when there is clay or muddy soil present this is because of the sheet structure of clay which gets dissociated with the introduction of water in it apart from this since this water is now present in the pore spaces hence it will increase the pore pressure of the soil material and thus will dissociate soil and hence can again cause slope stability. All these parameters will effect the slope stability.
