Use words (e.g. northern/southern, eastern/western, tropical/polar, coastal, etc.) to describe the locations, not latitude/longitude 11. Hong Kong is on the southern coast of China and is a major shipping port, with many cargo ships heading for the Panama Canal. Looking at the map of ocean currents, should container ships travelling from Hong Kong to the Panama Canal sail across the North Pacific or the Equatorial Pacific? Now look at ocean temperatures clicking on Sea temperature in the right-hand menu 12. Ocean water, like most things on earth, tends to be warmer near the equator and cooler at higher latitudes. Identify two places on Earth where there are strong ocean currents bringing warm water into a cooler region Open With PrintExplanation / Answer
The ocean currents have a great impact on the Earth’s climate. Areas near the equator receive more solar energy than the Polar Regions. But these will not get warmer constantly as the ocean currents and winds transport the heat from equatorial regions to Polar Regions. The transfer of heat through ocean currents regulate Earth’s climate.
As the currents flow along the continent edges, the coastal temperatures gets affected. The ocean currents that passes from low latitude to high latitudes are called as warm ocean currents. Two such are Gulf stream and Kuroshio Current
Gulf Stream:
The Gulf stream is a wram and swift Atlantic ocean current, originates in the Gulf of Mexico, follows the eastern coastlines of RS. Gulf stream is a northward accelerating current off the east coast, North America. In the middle it splits into north Atlantic drift(northern current) and canary current(Sourthern current). The gulf stream is 100Km wide and 800-1200mt deep. Velocity is fastest at the surface and slows down as going down.
Kuroshio Current:
It’s a north flowing ocean current on the western side of North Pacific. It’s a strong western boundary current. It’s also called as Japan current, gulf stream of pacific. It’s a warm northeasterly ocean current off the coast of Japan. It originates near the north equatorial current, divides east of Philippines. It runs from Formosa to about 35 degrees N latitude. It continues directly as a warm current called as kuroshio extension, from there it continues as the north pacific current. Kurisio is a fast ocean current; it carries around 50 million tons of sea water past Japan’s southeast coast. There are two types of water in the current; warm, saline water on the right and cold, dilute water on the left. The current undergoes to change with respect to speed over places.
