Question
True or False
11) On the first trip that astronauts ever took to the Moon they looked back and saw for the first time the Earth floating in space. The realization that the Earth is an oasis in space helped inspire our present concern for our environment.
12) The boundaries between the plates are geological active areas.
13) Earth’s atmosphere is warmed both from above by solar radiation, and from below by radiation from the Earth’s surface.
16) Mercury may be the fragment of a giant early collision that nearly stripped it to its core.
17) Earth manages to achieve a comfortable greenhouse effect by recycling its greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide and water.
18) Venus’s atmosphere is much thicker than that of the Earth because some of Earth’s gases are trapped in rocks and oceans.
20) Earth’s atmosphere allows the Sun’s infrared radiation in but doesn’t allow much visible light to escape, resulting in the greenhouse effect.
22) It is believed that Earth’s magnetic field is the result of motion of the solid inner core within the liquid outer core.
23) An extreme, possibly runaway, greenhouse effect occurred on Venus, making its planetary surface the hottest in the Solar System.
26) If we dump much more carbon dioxide into Earth’s atmosphere, Earth might become significantly hotter because of the greenhouse effect.
28) Mercury is covered with a fine dust, as is the surface of the Moon.
29) All the Jovian planets have atmospheres that are almost entirely hydrogen and helium and the small percentage of heavier elements is greater in Uranus and Neptune.
30) Some scientists speculate the Jupiter’s moon Europa may be a place where life might exist.
33) Jovian planets have rings because there is too much material to have fit into the ball of each planet.
34) Saturn is colder than Jupiter and has winds that are 4 times slower than the winds of Jupiter.
35) On Saturn charged particles interact with the atmosphere near the poles to produce auroras.
36) On Uranus chemical reactions are more limited than on Jupiter and Saturn because it is warmer.
37) Uranus was the first planet to be discovered that had not been known to the ancients.
40) On Jupiter’s “surface” clouds at different latitudes rotate at slightly different speeds and regions with different speeds correspond to different bands.
Fill in the Blanks
47) Scientists have concluded that the major source of energy in the interior, both at early times and now is natural ____________________ within the Earth
48) The outermost solid part of the Earth’s crust is known as the ____________________.
50) The Jovian planets are much larger than the terrestrial planets because they formed beyond the ____________________.
53) The giant planets consist mostly of ____________________ and ____________________, similar to the Sun
Explanation / Answer
11) It is false to say that on the first trip that astronauts ever took to the Moon they looked back and saw for the first time the Earth floating in space and get inspired by this because even from the very past they know that earth is the only planet where there is water and if we don't preserve that water then we are going to become like one of the other planet that we have in our solar system.
12) It is true to say that the boundaries between the plates are geological active areas beacuse if the plates move towards each other (Convergent boundaries) then we can have formation of mountains example himalayan mountain or formation of trenches like mariana trench, if they move away from each other (Divergent boundaries) then we can have mid oceanic ridges and if they move slide past each other (Transform boundaries) then we can have various earthquakes like we have in California due to san andreas fault.
13) It is false to say that Earth’s atmosphere is warmed both from above by solar radiation, and from below by radiation from the Earth’s surface because the only heat that we get in considerable amount is from sun rays that is from the above while the radioactive elements that produce energy from the inside won't last till the surface of the earth and hence we don't get radiation from below.
14) It is true to say that Mercury may be the fragment of a giant early collision that nearly stripped it to its core because it have a large core and a thin crust and mantle this is only possible due to stripping of its top layer due to various collisions. Apart from this mercury have large amount of iron as compared to earth which is again possible due to stripping.
