Explanation / Answer

s = 3t^2 + t + 2

a) t = 1 to t = 5.5

average speed = s(5.5) - s(1) / (5.5 - 1 )

s(5.5) = 3 (5.5)^2 + 5.5 + 2 = 98.25

s(1) = 3 (1)^2 + 1 + 2 = 6

( 98.25 - 6 ) / ( 5.5 - 1) = 20.5 feet per second

b) t = 1 to t = 9.1

s(9.1) = 3 (9.1)^2 + 9.1 + 2 = 259.53

s(1) = 3 (1)^2 + 1 + 2 = 6

s(9.1) - s(1) / (9.1 - 1) = ( 259.53 - 6) / ( 9.1- 1)

= 31.3 feet per second

c) from t= 1 to t = 3.8

s(3.8) = 3 (3.8)^2 + 3.8 + 2 = 49.12

avearage speed = ( 49.12 - 6 ) / 2.8

= 15.4 feet per second
