Tables 7.14 and 7.15 show the survival 50 years after graduation of men and women who graduated each year from 1938 to 1947 from various faculties of the University of Adelaide (data complied by J.A Keats). The columns labelled S contain the number of graduates who survived and the columns labelled T contain the total number of graduates. They were insufficient women graduates from the faculties of Medicine and Engineering to warrant analysis.

a) Are the proportions of graduates who survived for 50 years after graduation the same all years of graduation?

b) Are the proportions of male graduates who survived for 50 years after graduation the same for all faculties?

c) Are the proportions of female graduates who survived for 50 years after graduation the same for arts and science?

d) Is the differences between men and women in the proportion of graduate who survived for 50 years after graduation the same for arts and science?

Explanation / Answer

(a)

Proportions of graduates who survived for 50 years after graduation:

1938: 68/102 = 0.67

1939: 60/88 = 0.68

1940: 63/101 = 0.62

1941: 62/87 = 0.71

1942: 69/110 = 0.63

1943: 65/86 = 0.76

1944: 90/122 = 0.74

1945: 101/128 = 0.79

1946: 28/41 = 0.68

1947: 114/152 = 0.75

Therefore, we can say that the proportions of graduates who survived for 50 years after graduation is not the same for all years of graduation.

(b)

Proportions of male graduates who survived for 50 years after graduation:

Medicine: 177/275 = 0.64

Arts: 92/168 = 0.55

Science: 164/214 = 0.77

Engg.: 100/139 = 0.72

Therefore, we can say that the proportions of male graduates who survived for 50 years after graduation are not the same for all faculties.

(c)

Proportions of female graduates who survived for 50 years after graduation:

Arts: 126/157 = 0.80

Science: 58/61 = 0.95

Therefore, we can say that the proportions of female graduates who survived for 50 years after graduation are not the same for arts and science.

(d)

Differences between men and women in the proportion of graduate who survived for 50 years after graduation:

Arts: 0.80-0.55 = 0.25

Science: 0.95-0.77 = 0.18

Therefore, we can say that the differences between men and women in the proportion of graduate who survived for 50 years after graduation are not the same for arts and science.
