Question

The phase of H2O you will likely see at 1atm pressure and 25 oC temperature is _______________.(1 point)

If an astronaut opens a bottle of liquid water on the day-side of the moon, the water will turn into ___________(Ice/liquid/Vapor). (1 point)

If the astronaut left a bottle of water at the bottom of a crater on the night-side of the moon, the water in the bottle will be _________ (Ice/liquid/Vapor). (1 point)

Triple point of water is a unique temperature and pressure condition where ice, liquid water and water vapor all are in equilibrium, hence co-exist. You decide to do a simple experiment by tossing several ice-pieces in a pot of boiling water, which already has liquid and vapor together. So, now you can observe ice, water and steam all together. Is this also a triple point? ____________ (Yes/No).  (1 point)

Atmospheric pressure on Mars is slightly below 0.006 atm, while the surface temperature in the equatorial region ranges from -100 C at night to +70 C during day time. If you were on a 24 hour lookout on the Mars equator, the form(s) of water (H2O) you would see on Mars during the day time would be________, while at night time you would see water in the form of _____. Would you see any liquid water on Mars surface? ________ (3 points)

Explanation / Answer

Q1)Liquid phase.

its a normal temperature and pressure and water appears in liquid phase.

Q2) Vapour

during the day time the moon surface temperature rises to 127 degrees celsius, so the liquid water change to vapour phase.

Q3) Ice.

on the night side of the moon the temperature falls to -173 degrees celsius, hence the liquid water becomes ice.

Q4)No.

triple point of a substance is the temperature and pressure at which three phases coexist. for water it is 0.010C and 611.2 Pa.

in this case when we put some ice pieces to the boiling water the three phases appears for a short time and also they are not in coexistence, ice will melt to water and this water will convert to vapour.

Q5) day time = vapour phase night time= ice

the atmospheric pressure of mars is low and during day time temperature reach up to 700C so the water will appears as water vapour.

in night time the temperature falls to -1000C, then the water turn to frozen state.

the atmosphere of mars is very thin, so the liquid phase of the water cannot exist and the ice formed during cold nights will directly vaporize to the atmosphere when temperature rises. so the liquid water cannot exist on martian surface.
