Compare the position of Assateague Island in FIGURE 6.7, from 1972 (purple position of the island) to 2010 (red outline of $36 the island). The northern two kilometers of the island remained in a relatively stable position from 1972-2010, but the rest of Assateague Island did not. Explain what happened to the sauthern three kilometers of Assateague Island on FIGURE 6.7 from 1972-2010 and infer why it may have happened. F. REFLECT &DISCUSS; The westward migration of Assateague Island could be halted and probably reversed if all of the groins, jetties, and sea walls around Ocean City were removed. How would removal of all of these structures place properties in Ocean City at greater risk to environmental damage than they now face?

Explanation / Answer

E. Asateague island , as in question given that the northern 2 kilometer of the island remained relatively stable position from 1972 to 2010 but rest part of the island is not. As we know that our earth crust is divided into major and minor plates which moves continuously but their speed is too slow for a naked eye. we can comapre the position of continents of 50 to thousand years of gap to know the movement of the continents . because all continents and island etc are situated at these plates so with plates these continent also move but movement speed of the all plates are different from each other so we can say that northern part of the island of two kilometer was situated on other plate and rest of the part was situated at different plate which was faster comparatively to northern plate so thats why northern area of the island was remained stable relatively. it is possible that that part will be seperate from the whole land mass in next thousand of years.

F. environmental condition will also change with the locations. every place having different and specific environmental conditions and according to that vegetation and ecological balance has been created on that area. but when location changed from previous place , ecological balance destructed and it affect all type of vegetation and animals.
