Question

Groundwater Inflow: Using all the data presented so far, solve the water budget equation for average annual groundwater inflow to Mono Lake in cubic meters per year (m3/yr). Use the precipitation value for Mono Lake (question 4), NOT the value for the Mono Basin (question 3). a) 17756277.3 m3/yr b) -17756277.3 m3/yr c) 1.8 x 108 m3/yr d) 1.175 x 108 m3/yr e) 1.174 x 108 m3/yr

Reference to question 4:

Calculate the average annual precipitation in cubic meters per year (m3/yr) for Mono Lake.

Select one:

a. 6.39 x 108 m3/yr

b. 9.632 x 107 m3/yr

c. 6.40 x 104 m3/yr

d. 96320 m3/yr

e. 6.40 x 107 m3/yr <-- answer is E

Explanation / Answer

for 4. (e) 6.40 x 107 m3/yr

Given rainfall = 35.5cm and area of mono lake =181.3 km2

Avg annual precipitation is given by

rainfall(in cm) x area of mono lake = 35.5cm x 181.3 km2 = 64361500 m3

Since water budget is given by

Inputs-Outputs=Change in Storage

P + (Q - D) + G - E = V

where P= Precipitation = 6.40 x 107 m3/yr

Q =discharge from 3 creeks = 1.43 x 108 m3/yr

G = groundwater inflow to Mono Lake

E =Evaporation =2.072 x 108 m3/yr

D =water diversions from the three creeks before flowing in Mono Lake =1.27508 x 108 m3/yr

V = the change in water volume in lake = -1.03 x 107 m3/yr

So, G = V+E+D - P - Q =  -1.03 x 107 + 2.072 x 108 + 1.27508 x 108 - 6.40 x 107 -  1.43 x 108  m3/yr

G = 1.174 X 108 m3/yr
