Question

Refer to the map anf photograph of Saint Catherines Island, Georgia (figure 6.5). Note that on the southwestern and east-central parts of the island there are large areas of salt marsh. Living salt marsh plants are present there, as shown on the right (west) in figure 6.5A and B. Also, note the linear sandy beach in figure 6.5A and B, bounded on its seaward side (left) by another strip of salt marsh mud. However, all of the living, surficial saltmarsh plants and animals have been stripped from this area. This is called relict salt marsh mud.

1) What type of sediment is probably present beneath the beach sands in figures 6.5A and B?

2)Explain how you think the beach sands became located landward of the relict saltmarsh mub.

Explanation / Answer

1.Behind the beach the sediments are deep muds and peat(formed by decomposing plant matter) and are known as salt marsh (Salt mashes are the regions behind the beach dute to tidal process generally in a tidal flat en sedimentary environment.) in 65 A and 65 B.

2. The beach sands are transpoted due to tidal activity when tidal water enters and carries sea water and beach sands and the tide returns back to the ocean the sediment are distributed throught
