Question
Banded iron formations are ______________________.
mafic and the ultramafic sedimentary rocks found in the Archean sedimentary belts and represent one of the oldest known types of sedimentary rock on Earth.
cherts and the iron-rich sedimentary rocks found only in the Proterozoic sedimentary belts and represent the oldest known types of sedimentary rock on Earth.
carbonate and the evaporite-rich sedimentary rocks found in the Archean sedimentary belts and represent one of the oldest known types of sedimentary rock on Earth.

Why aren't other planets in our solar system suited to life as we know it compared to Earth?
A larger planet's gravitational pull on its atmosphere would be so great that the dense atmosphere would not admit sunlight; a smaller planet would lack sufficient gravitational attraction to retain an atmosphere with nitrogen; and surface temperatures too high or too low would not allow water in the form of ice.
A larger planet's gravitational pull on its atmosphere would be so great that the dense atmosphere would admit too much sunlight; a smaller planet would lack sufficient gravitational attraction to retain an atmosphere with oxygen; and surface temperatures too high or too low would not allow liquid water.

Explanation / Answer
Banded Iron Formation are
cherts and the iron-rich sedimentary rocks found only in the Proterozoic sedimentary belts and represent the oldest known types of sedimentary rock on Earth.
BIFs are alternate iron and chert layers deposited around 2500 to 1800Mya during the great oxidation event. In the Archean, the iron oxides were dissolved in the water and there was no oxygen present on the earth that could oxidize them. But in the Proterozoic times with the evolution of the living organism, there was a bloom in the oxygen content in the ocean water and this oxidized all the iron precipitating them as dark layers of magnetite followed by a layer of chert when the oxygen was again building up. This lead to the formation of BIFs in the Proterozoic.

A strong gravitational pull of a planet results in the thicker atmosphere, as stronger gravitational forces will tend to hold on to a large mass of the atmosphere and to make the atmosphere dense causing a large amount of sunlight to reflect back to space. Weaker gravitational pull of a small planet will tend to hold on to a small mass of the atmosphere and allow the majority of the atmosphere to escape into space. Water remains liquid within a very small range of temperature and any temperature higher or lower than this range would change the water state into either vapor or ice, and life, as we know, is largely dependent on the liquid water.
