Question
5. Emergency plans are being formulated so that rapid action can be taken in the event of an equipment failure at the Trupointe Cooperative Inc. in Medway Ohio. It is predicted that if a particular pipeline were to rupture it would release ammonia at a rate of 100 lbm/sec. Persons exposed to ammonia at its IDLH level will be endangered and anywhere that the concentration might be that high should be evacuated until repairs are made. What recommendation would you make as to how far from the rupture people should be evacuated if the facility is located in a rural area and:
a. The wind is 6 miles per hour and the sun is shining brightly.
b. The night is overcast and the wind is 10 miles per hour.
Explanation / Answer
first of all it will be a serious condition if there would any repture takes place in the pipe through which ammoia is flowing. now for the case of the emergency cases and if the plant is at the rural area then we need to make the plan such that it would help to save as many as can with bulk volume of person. here the two condition is given that is wind is blowing 6 miles per hour and sun is shinning brightly and the another is the night overcast and the wind is 10 miles per hours. then if we wind the actual spreadin of the wind then it would be 10*6=60 miles per hours. this is a very high speed to flow. in such cases we have to recommend the following precaustions as -
1) make the settlement of the people away from the situation.
2) vaccination and the proper ventilation should be there.
3) situation should be control as fast as possible by repairing so necessary macinary should be available there all the time.
