Question
Solve each problem by acting it out. Three adults and two kids want to cross a river by using a small canoe. The canoe can carry two kids or one adult. How many times must the canoe cross the river to get everyone to the other side? There was once a farmer who, as part of his route to town, used a rickety old boat to cross a wide river. One day he took his dog and went to town just to buy corn. However, in addition to buying corn, he bought a goose that he intended to take home and used to start raising geese. (The farmer was no fool; he already had another goose.) But he also knew that his boat was not reliable: it could handle only himself and one of the other three things he had with him. He feared that if left alone, the dog would eat the goose or the goose would eat the corn. How could he get himself and everything else across the river safely? A group of ten students met on the basketball court in back of the dorm for a pickup game. Everyone there shook hands with everyone else exactly once. How many handshakes took place?Explanation / Answer
TWO KIDS AND THREE ADULTS:-
The canoe must make a total of 4 trips across the river ro carry the entire people across the river but the last trip will only be a trip that will carry all the people across the river and a return trip is not required. Hence the canoe will cross the river 7 times.
THE FARMER, THE GOOSE AND THE CORN:-
The farmer will first of all take the goose and keep it on the other river bank. Then he will take the dog and keep it on the other river bank but on his return journey will bring the goose to the initial river bank. Then he will carry the corn from the initial river bank to the opposite bank. Then finally he will carry the goose and himself to the opposite bank.
MEETING:-
as there are 10 basketball players each one has to shake hands with the other 9 people.
so there should be a total of 10*9=90 handshakes.
but when the first player has shaken hands with everyone else, other players have already shaken hands with him. so we are counting the result twice.
hence the number of handshakes=90/2=45.
