Question
5. Identify the strike, dip and dip direction measurement most appropriate for the inclined metamorphic layers found here in the Casco Bay area that meet the following criteria: (2 pts each) a. strike needs to be parallel to the Maine coastline Answer A (for N25W); B (for N80E) C (for N45E) and D (for N75W) b. dip angle needs to be for steeply-dipping planes, in degrees Answer A (for 15); B (for 85); C (for 40) and D (for 30) c. down to dip direction towards the Gulf of Maine. Answer A (for NE); B (for NW); C (for SE); and D (for SW)Explanation / Answer
5a) Since the Maine coastline itself is roughly trending NE the strike of the metamorphic layers too needs to be trending NE. Now, N80E would mean nearly an east-west trend which we can clearly see that the Maine coastline isn't, therefore the most appropriate strike would be C.N45E
5b) A steep dip angle would mean the largest dip angle any plane makes, hence, in this case, it is B(85o)
5c) Since the layers around the Maine coastline strike around N45E the dip direction would be perpendicular to this. Also given is that it dips towards the Gulf of Maine which is to the east of the coast, the down to dip direction would be N45E+ 90 (since it dips towards east and the angle would be clockwise) or C.SE
