Question
consider a committee of 3 voting to selct a ranking of 4 candidates. The voting goes as follows:
the chair person assigns 4096, 2048, 1024, and 0 points respectively to her first, second, third, and fourth preference. the vice-chair person persson assigns 512, 256, 128 and 0 points to his first, second, third, and fourth preference.
the auxiliary member assigns 32, 16, 8 and 0 points
points are totaled and the ranking determined by point totals.
a)is it possible that any 2 candidates receive the same number of points? explain.
b) wich of the three fairness criteria are true for this system? explain.
Explanation / Answer
a) no it is not possible that any two candidates will receive the same number of points. This is because the difference in the points between two consecutive rankings given by the chair person is more than the sum of the highest points given by the vice chair person and the auxillary member together. So it stands out eventually that irrespective of the points given by the vice chair person and the auxillary member, the rankings will always be in accordance to the points given by the chair person.
b) According to me, the Fairness criteria of the auxillary member is true for this system as the point differnce between two consecuitve rankings is low enough, so that the judging of the other members can also matter.
