q3.

Select the answer choice below that best explains the reasoning for your conclusions about the depositional environment.

It is composed primarily of sandstone and varies in color from tan to red and possibly white. Sedimentary structures include large-scale cross-bedding. Wind broke up the dinosaur fossils.

It is composed primarily of shale, sandstone, and limestone. Sedimentary structures include cross-bedding and ripple marks. Fossils include well preserved fishes and turtles.

It is composed primarily of sandstone and shale and varies in color (red, tan, and green). Sedimentary structures include sand-filled channels and cut-and-fill structures. Fossils include variably preserved dinosaur remains and plants.

It is composed primarily of shale and siltstone that are mostly gray to black, indicating abundant organic material. Sedimentary structures include laminae and graded bedding. Fossils include marine organisms.

q 4. Why are dinosaur skeletons collected from shales at locality 1 on figure 4.9A more likely to be complete than are the dinosaur remains collected from sandstones at locality 2 on figure 4.9A?

Dinosaurs found at locality 1 were terrestrial species and typically strong and large. Dinosaurs found at locality 2 were smaller, aquatic species and generally more fragile. The aquatic dinosaur bones were, therefore, more likely to become disarticulated and broken over time.

Dinosaur bones found at locality 1 are relatively young and, therefore, well preserved. Dinosaur bones found at locality 2 are older than those at locality 1 and have had additional time to become disarticulated and broken.

Dinosaur bones found at locality 1 were buried at a high elevation where they remained undisturbed and well preserved. Dinosaur bones found at locality 2 were at a lower elevation where they were trapped by floods and buried rapidly, causing them to become disarticulated and broken.

Dinosaurs found at locality 1 were trapped by floods and buried whole with little or no transport. Dinosaurs found at locality 2 would become disarticulated and broken during stream transport.

Explanation / Answer

Answer No-3-It is composed primarily of shale and siltstone that are mostly gray to black, indicating abundant organic material. Sedimentary structures include laminae and graded bedding. Fossils include marine organisms.

As we know that shale and siltstone both are derived from the marine environment and formed in very low energy condition means they formed in deep oceanic area (offshore), when the sediment getting in suspension and start settling reached till the bottom of sea floors. If we are talking about organic matter that produced by small microscopic organism using nutrients. When these orgnism started dying and they are getting deposited into the sediment and concealed into the strata.Beacuse the shale and siltstone both are formed by small grains of particle size in very low energy condition they have nature of cohesiveness and they bind the organic matter into the interstitial space. The organic matter ultimately converted into the carbon and it shows as black to grey in colour. Then about the structural set up of these size paricle with their energy condition formed the laminae structure and from bootom to top they showing fine upward sequences that denotes the graded bedding. In terms of marine organism that getting fossilised may be zooplanktons.

ANSWER (2) LOCALITY-1

The locality 1 belong to the finest sedimentaion history means the preservation of dinosaur in shaly type of rock body it is related to sea lavel transgression so finest sediment from deep sea that terminated on land due to sea level rising during cretaceous specially K/T boundary and preserved into the shale.

LOCALITY-2- At locality 2 the dinosaur get preserved into the sandstone it means that there should be the regression and sea level getting fall. This is only happen when the local tectonic make uplift one side and another side of basin that behaves as a sea level fall and in this case only the sandstone get form and dinosaur trapped into the sediment.
