Question
Nuclear power is one of the world largest energy producers. In light of the recent nuclear accidents in Japan and a growing demand for energy, does it concern you that nuclear power is one of the most abundant sources of potential for energy growth? What types of problems does using nuclear power present? What will you tell the people about the safety of nuclear power? What types of renewable energy could be a viable alternative? How could both nuclear energy and renewable energy impact the threat of climate change? Explain your ideas. Must be 100 words or more Please make copy paste available
Explanation / Answer
Nuclear power is a prominent alternative to the coventional coal energy. This is a more eco-friendly solution since it emits far fewer greenhouse gases during electricity generation than coal or other traditional power plants.
Problems asspciated with Nuclear power
1.There is always a high risk of accident and the Radiation isn’t easily dealt with.
2.Nuclear waste: It is produced at every single stage of the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining and enrichment, to reactor operation and the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. Most of the nuclear waste will remain hazardous for more than hundreds of thousands of years.
3. Target for terrorism: Nuclear products are also a target for terrorism as it can be used as a weapon for mass killing.
4. While mining Uranium, miner's health are most affected.
5. The Shipping of nuclear waste carries an additional threat to interception to terrorism.
About Safety of Nuclear Power
Nuclear power is quite safe. going through the data ,these have been only three major accidents in over 17,000 cumulative reactor-years of commercial nuclear power operation in 33 countries. None of the industry is free from accident but they learn from them.
The evidence collected over six decades shows that nuclear power is a quite safe and clean way to generate electricity. The risk of accidents in nuclear power plants is low and declining. Radiological effects on people of any radioactive releases can be avoided by certain measures
Following are the major alternatives to Nuclear power
1 Solar Energy
2. Hydrogen
3. Natural Gas
4.Thorium: Thorium produces less waste and is more abundant than Uranium.
The Nuclear Power and other renewable sources of energy are going to play a major role in fighting climate change. These sources are going to replace coal and thus reducing the carbon footprint. These sources are the future of Energy sector and thus there is an immediate need of it's expansion with increased safety and efficiency to fight climate change.
