Question

Lunar maria are: The remains of what were once ancient, salty seas which evaporated, leaving behind sodium-rich dry seabeds Large deposits of water ice deposited by comet impacts and frozen in the shadow of deep craters Giant craters gouged straight through the lunar crust by high velocity impacts and filled with lava from the melted mantle The rocky remains of a very large asteroid which hit the Moon at low velocity and “splattered” across the surface leaving vast rubble piles of debris but no hollowed out crater Ancient segments of the lunar crust with low density which buoyed to the surface and floated on a sea of magma as the Moon cooled and solidified

Explanation / Answer

Lunar maria are : Giant craters gouged straight through the lunar crust by high velocity impacts and filled with lava from the melted mantle. They are the dark and smooth volcanic plains(mainly of basalt) on the surface of the moon and formed from the lava flows which filled in the crater-like basins.
