Question

This problem set will allow us to become seismologists and locate and measure a simulated earthquake. Your final submission may be typed or handwritten, but it must be legible. Be sure to show all of your calculations and be careful to keep track of your units.

Measuring Earthquakes:
For this exercise you will access to the internet for the Norton Earthquake Interactivity. The URL is here: https://d1lexza0zk46za.cloudfront.net/geology/animations+and+simulations/earthquakes/index.html

Follow the on-screen directions and report your answers below. You can summarize your findings in a paragraph or a chart.

Pick 3 cities

Report the difference between P and S wave arrival times (P-S arrival) for each of your

three seismic stations.

Report the distance to the epicenter for each of your three seismic stations.

Where is the epicenter of the Earthquake?

Report the highest amplitude of ground motion for each of your three seismic stations.

What is the Richter magnitude of this earthquake?

This earthquake did not occur near a plate boundary. Have earthquakes occurred here

in the past? Why can we expect earthquakes to occur here?

Explanation / Answer

i have choosen 3 cities

1). Lexington

2). Springfield

3). Indianapolis

now click on ACCEPT

then click on ythe choosen city

1st click on Lexinngton

drag the green line to 40 which is the lag in the arrival time of p and s wave which = 40 sec then click on accept

similarly do for

springfield = 60 sec

Indianapolis = 80 sec

after selecting all now it starts showing S-P lag timings

click on TRAVEL TIME

now drag the #1 to 40, #2 to 60, #3 to 80

then click on ACCEPT

then drag the each lines #1, #2, #3 which fits the upper tip of line to the s-wave line and the lower tip with the p-wave line

then click on FIND KM

which gives distance between the seismograms to the epicentres

Lexington = 365 km

Springfield = 550km

Indianapolis= 725 km

then click on MAP

then click on points on each cities thus it assigns radius values for each seismograms

Lexington = 5

Springfield = 10

Indianapolis= 10

now click on accept and continue

now click on each city which opens the amplitude graph then drag black line upto the highest amplitudes such as

Lexington = 6 mm

Springfield = 14mm

Indianapolis= 6mm

then click on MAGNITUDE

then drag the line of amplitude according to the values of the cities then it results in the intersection of these results gives the range of amplitude

line 1 to 6mm

line 2 to 14mm

line 3 to 6mm

then richter magnitude of earthquakes are between the 4.6 to 6.3

No many of the earthquakes have not occured in the past here but the earthquakes occuring to the western part of america have their shaking to these areas because it is out of the pacific ring of fire , majority of these earthquakes have occured near the plate boundaries because of the movement of the plates, expection is very low it is not the earthquake prone area
