Question

1. Outline the main goals of green architecture, describing how an architect or group of architects achieved each of those goals in a specific structure. Discuss the advantages and difficulties of green architecture in terms of meeting environmentalist objectives and the needs of those who will be living and/or working within them. 2. Define and/or describe the appearances, materials, techniques, and reasons for the development of five of the structural systems of architecture, with reference to specific structures that are models of each system you discuss.

Explanation / Answer

1).

Green Architecture is largely driven by four goals:

These goals are accompalised by the following ways -

Natural Building refers to the use of primarily naturally occurring materials and human labour.

Energy-Efficient Architecture works towards eliminating dependence on external sources of energy example- solar energy, wind energy etc

Earthen Materials include:

Organic Architecture, which blends building with site, has both stimulating and calming effects on people. Greener buildings have been shown to boost workplace

Insulative Materials include:

Advantages of green architecture-

1). The environmental benefits of green architecture are significant. Green buildings promote and protect ecosystems and biodiversity, improve the quality of air and water, reduce solid waste and conserve natural resources.

2).Plenty of economic benefits stem from sustainable building, including reduced operating costs, increased asset value and profits, higher employee satisfaction and productivity

3). The health and community benefits of eco-friendly buildings include improved indoor air quality, temperature regulation and acoustics; optimal occupant comfort and health; a reduced burden on local infrastructure; and a higher overall quality of life

Disadvantages of green architecture-

1).Green architecture presents hindrance in the industrial world. This is a very difficult task, as it requires expenditure of many resources and investments.

2). This is also one of the major problems that green architects have to face in order to fulfill the goal of reducing impacts of constructions, which can only take place by the help of deforestation that has caused notable Ozone Depletion.

3). Immense deforestation and human violations into various ecosystems, like the development of roads in the Amazon Rainforest, has caused environmental disruptions and has significantly increased the risks of endangering biodiversity.

2)-

Commonly used structures can be classified into five major categories, depending on the type of primary stress that may arise in the members of the structures under major design loads. However any two or more of the basic structural types described in the following may be combined in a single structure, such as a building or a bridge in order to meet the structure's functional requirements.
