Question

24. -3 points SerPSE9 6.P044.WI My Notes . Ask Your Teacher An object of mass m1-4.00 kg is tied to an object of mass m2-: 3.50 kg with String 1 of length0.500 m. The combination is swung in a vertical circular path on a second string, String 2, of length l = 0.500 m. During the motion, the two strings are collinear at all times as shown in the figure. At the top of its motion, m2 is traveling at v 6.20 m/s. String e String 2 (a) What is the tension in String 1 at this instant? (b) What is the tension in String 2 at this instant? (c) Which string will break first if the combination is rotated faster and faster? o string 1 o string2 Need Help? LWatch

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

(a)

By v = r?
=>? = v/r = 6.20/0.5
=>? = 12.4 rad/sec

Thus the velocity of the m1 will be= r? = 1 x 12.4 = 12.4 m/s

Thus by T = mv2/r - mg
=>T1 = [4 x (12.4)2]/1 - 4 x 9.8
=>T1 = 575.84 Newton

(b) By T = mv2/r - mg
=>T = [3.50 x (6.2)2]/0.5 - 3.5 x 9.8
=>T = 234.78 Newton

=>T2 = T1 + T
=>T2 = 575.84 + 234.78 = 810.62 Newton

(c) String 2 will break first due to the larger force on it.
