Question
The carbon cycle that we discussed in class is an example of a “global biogeochemical cycle”, in which the element carbon is cycled between different components of the Earth system. There are several biogeochemical cycles. In fact, there are often interactions between different biogeochemical cycles. In this problem, we will examine one such interaction between the carbon and oxygen cycles. We learned that in respiration, atmospheric oxygen combines with biological material to produce CO2, water, and energy:
a) Let us assume that ALL of the biological material on land is respired. This would be about 2300 GtC (Vegetation, Soil & Detritus) indicated in the carbon cycle diagram below:

Using the stoichiometry of the respiration reaction shown above, how many Gt of OXYGEN would be consumed from respiring all this biological material?
b) Currently the atmospheric composition of oxygen is 21% (by moles). What % would atmospheric oxygen decline to if all of the biological material mentioned in a) is respired?
c) What does this calculation tell you about the often-repeated saying that “trees are the lungs of the Earth”?
What does this calculation tell you about the often-repeated saying that “trees are the lungs of the Earth”?
Explanation / Answer
Answer-
The carbon and oxygen are two basic element that used in the global biogeochenical cycle. In biogeochemical cycle the elememntal form of any material to molecular form including biota ,geological process and chemical reaction teken place. If we are talking about any geological processes in that phase if any chemical reaction involve then at that time the chemistray makes thing realiable and more predictable and quite easy for making a good outcome.
Things are getting more complex and become a so difficult when the biological function starts getting work with chemical processing.Cycle like carbon and oxygen, both are important and equally contributing in respiration in terms of golbal terrestrial respiratory reaction.Where the some organic molecule used in presence of oxygen and c compound oxidised, produced the huge amount of enegy in the Form ATP.
At a molecular level whatever the c and o are used during the respiration process are quite defferent in terms of amount of c and o but when this reaction and biogeochemical cycle get complete then it makes their amount in equal content.
Even in the case of c4 plant the reaction mechanism are quite different compare to c3 plants ,so for that different kind of light and dark reaction getting started.
