Question
You throw a ball of mass 1 kilogram upward from a height of 0 meters with a velocity of a = 23 m/s on Mars, where the acceleration due to gravity is g = 3.711 m/s2.
a. Use your calculator to approximate how much longer (in seconds) the ball is in the air on Mars compared to on Earth where g = 9.80 m/s2.(Round your answer to three decimal places.)
b. Use your calculator to approximate how much higher (in meters) the ball went on Mars compared to on Earth. (Round your answer to one decimal place.)
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
given u = 23 m/s
and final velocity will be zero,
tm ( time at mars) = v / am
te ( time at earth) = v / ae
=> tm / te = ae / am
=> tm / te = 2.641
=> tm = 2.641 te is the required answer.
b) using the formula h = v^2 / 2 g
=> hm = v^2 / 2gm (gm is gravity at mars)
and he = v^2 / 2ge
=> hm / he = ge / gm
=> hm / he = 9.8 / 3.711
=> hm = 2.6 he is the required answer
