Question

For each of the following calculations, indicate whether the calculated mass would be higher than, lower than, or the same as the actual molecular weight. (a) The temperature of the boiling water was actually lower than that recorded, this would cause the calculated mass to be: higher than (), lower than (), the same as () the actual molecular weight. (b) A few droplets of the condensed liquid remained in the neck of the flask when the flask was removed from the hot water bath, this would cause the calculated mass to be: higher than (), lower than (), the same as () the actual molecular weight. (c) In the weighing after vaporization, water was trapped in the creases of the aluminum foil, this would cause the calculated mass to be: higher than (), lower than (), the same as () the actual molecular weight. (d) The flask touched the walls of the beaker while in the boiling water bath, this would cause the calculated mass to be: higher than (), lower than (), the same as () the actual molecular weight.

Explanation / Answer

a) as we know the density of the water is inversly proportional to temperature , so if the actual temperature is lower than the recorded than , its mass wll be higher than the actual.

b) these droplets are due to surface tension or the stiking properties of water, so these droplets will be gone after some tomes and that will not affect the mass . in this case mass will be same as actual.

c) the vapours in the aluminium foil will again condense into water droplets and come out of foil , so these will cause a increased mass. so in this case mass will be higher than the actual.

d) this will cause a lower recorded mass than the actual.
