Dredging is a process of digging out sediments from rivers, seas and other water bodies to counter flooding by depositing sediments.
though venice , new orleans and other critical cities are under threat to sink, human activities also plays an important role in this consequence. dredging alone is not the best long term technique to counter flooding, it could help only to certain extent but when there is a large precipitation or extreme river flow it would turn out to be a failure.
dredging may not be an optimal solution to pause sinking of jakarta or even canals, because sinking of Jakarta with a high rate is not due to ample of water present but it is due to lack of water benaeth its surface.
everyday tons of water is squeezed out of the ground and almost every household is dependend upon these water sources for daily consumptions, and moreover thousands of illegal digging of wells is done which in fact accelerates the case. although warning has been issued to stop digging wells several times but corruption wins everytime.
dredging techniques would do a small help to stop flooding to certain time, but sinking of the city could not helped from this technique and the city would continue to sink and by the end of the century it would be completly under the sea.
Dredging would have no effect to reduce sinking although it would increase the capacity of the rivers to hold much water but sinking of the city is inevitable.
other than this, one of the major problems is the construction of heavy buildings where situation is even more critical with sinkage. with the heavy loads of construction and nothing to counterforce beneath the surface as from years the underground has been hollowed by squeezing out water , and the city's surface sinks even more addition to natural sinking.
