Question

My questions are: How can we frame out understanding of the Six Day War in the context of the global "Cold War"? Did this happen because of European interference and alliances or did it happen "organically"? Can we say that the "Six Day War" was a part of the larger Cold War that was happening all over the globe during this time period?

Here is a video resource that may assist in this. The first six minutes provide an overview of the founding of Israel and discuss the Six Day War:

Explanation / Answer

Yes, we can say that the "Six Day War" was a part of the larger Cold War that was happening all over the globe.

First of all, "Six Day War" was the third war in the long line of Arab-Israeli war that started in 1948, the war spanned only 6 days during which Israel almost decimated Egypt's air force and captured new territory.

Israel fought against a combined force of Egypt, Jordan, Syria. The war ended on June 10, 1967.

In May 1967 USSR provided faulty intel to Naser, the leader of egypt that Israel was assembling troops on syrian border.

Naseer, then closed the Straits of Tiran to Israel once again after the Suez crisis(almost 10 years ago) which led to maritime blockade for Israel.

USSR was more concerend with Israe nuclear programme. They had a fear that if Israel achieved a nuclear counter deterrent , it would prevent USSR from using its nuclear clout to back up its arab clients and thus might destroy the Soviet's regional influence..

So, the roots of this "Six Day War" was related to the cold war that was happening around the world and the fact that it was more of a game of having a influence in the region.

For Israeli , it was moment of crisis , either wait for the enemy to attack and potentially destroy the nation or take the offensive and attack first.

Eventually the later was choosed and on june 5 , israeli air force launched a surprise attack and destroyed Nasser's grounded air force, then turned their sights to the troops amased on the border of Syria and Jordan.Within 6 days the fight was over, with Israel dramatically overpowering the neiighbours.Israel also gained Sinai and Gaza from Egypt, the West Bank and Jerusalem from Jordan and the Golan heights from Syria. The little nation had quadrupled its territory in a week.
