Question

Hello, I am new to hydrogeology, and I am having difficulty figuring this problem out. I know the answer is 3.72*10^5 ft^3, but I don't know how to solve it.

The parking lot of the Spendmore Megamall has an area of 128 ac. It is partially landscaped to provide some areas of grass. Assume that an average 63% of the water that falls on the parking lot will flow into a nearby ditch, and the rest either evaporates or soaks into unpaved areas. If a summer thunderstorm drops 3.23 cm of rain, how many cubic feet of water will flow into the drainage ditch?

Anyone that can help show me how to work this problem out, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Explanation / Answer

The parking lot of the Spendmore Megamall has an area of 128 ac.

1 acre =43560 ft^2

128 acre = 128 * 43560 ft^2 = 5575680 ft^2

Summer thunderstorm drops 3.23 cm of rain.

1 cm = 0.0328084 ft

3.23 cm = 3.23 *  0.0328084 ft = 0.105971 ft

____________________________________________________________________________

Average 63% of the water that falls on the parking lot will flow into a nearby ditch.

Cubic feet of water that will flow into the drainage ditch = 5575680 ft^2 * 0.105971 ft * 0.63

= 372242 ft^3

= 3.72242 *10^5 ft^3

It can be rounded to 3.72*10^5 ft^3
