Explanation / Answer

Igneous rock

Extrusive Igneous rocks require a fast cooling period, formed on the earth surface, and intruded into rocks.

Mafic (basaltic) igneous rock - is an igneous rock that is rich in magnesium and iron, and their presence gives mafic rock its characteristics in dark colour. Common mafic rocks include basalt and its coarse grained intrusive equivalent, gabbro.

Intermediate (andesitic) igneous rock - It is an extrusive rock intermediate in composition between rhyolite and basalt. It is of moderate viscosity and forms thick lavas flows and domes. It is intermediate in terms of its colour and generally uniformaly fine grained.

Example of igneous rock

Colombia River Basalt Group is a large igneous province. It is composed of a basalt rock, which is a common extrusive igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of basaltic lava exposed at or very near the surface of planet or moon.

Sedimentary Rock - are rocks formed from sediment. They are deposited over time, and often show layers which can be seen in cliffs.

Clastic Sedimentary Rocks - form by weathering processes which break down rocks into pebble, sand, or clay particles by exposure to wind, ice, and water.

Carbonte Sedimentary Rocks - it composed primarily of carbonate minerals. The two major carbonate sedimentary rocks are limestone which is composed of calcite or aragonite (different crystal forms of CaCO3) and dolostone, which is composed of the mineral dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2).

Other sedimentary rocks - Chemical sedimentary rocks which forms when mineral constituents in solution become supersaturated and inorganically precipitate.

An example of sedimentary rocks found on earth-

Virgin Formation found in Utah, US. It is composed of a siltstones, where it  is a sedimentary rock which has a grain size in the silt range, finer than sandstone and coarser than claystones.

Metamorphic Rock

Metamorphic rock form as a transformation of pre existing rock. It is a type of rock which has been changed by extreme heat and pressure.

Foliated Metamorphic Rock - are formed within the Earth's interior under extremely high pressures that are unequal, occurring when the pressure is greater in one direction than in the others. Such as genesis, slate.

Non- foliated Metamorphic Rock -  are formed around igneous intrusions where the temperatures are high but the pressures are relatively low and equal in all directions. Such as marble, quartizite.

An example of metamorphic rocks found on earth-

Wasatch Range in US. It is composed of Mississippian marble in a big cottonwood canyon.
