Takehome #1-Hadley cell flow patterns of air and moisture Circle is status, arrow is process. Show a complete cycle of the air flow in a Hadley cell and include the involvement of water. Draw enough circles and arrows to show the cycle. Start & end of the cycle Warm, moist Equatorial air On the back or another page type a narrative that describes what is pictured on this page (staple if 2 pages). Submit a hard copy of both pages in class, and the narrative only to Turnitin.com.

Explanation / Answer

The Hadley cell is an atmospheric circulation pattern in the tropics that produces winds called the tropical easterlies and the trade winds. In the Hadley cell, air rises up into the atmosphere or near the equator, flows toward the poles , returns to the Earth’s surface in the subtropics, and flows back towards the equator.

In the picture, at first the air is moist and warm equitorial air. Due to sun's heat it rises up into the atmosphere to a height of 10-15 km, flows towards the poles to about 300 latitudes, cools, relieves moisture and settles down. This cooled air is in area of high pressure, while near the equator there is area of low pressure. So this air again flow towards the equator but now at a lower height.
