Question
Hii. i was hoping you to help me out with an assignment that i need to do. So, In this assignment, i have to talk about a specific Geologic event that has happened. in addition, i went to this place called " La Bufadora" Located in ENSENADA, Mexico. apparently, This event happens because of a fracture. the sea water then rises and occupies the fracture. the water is expelled by the air from the bottom of the fracture on the new wave arrival, expelling the water like a giant geyser to heights up to 15 meters. So what i need is Information of how this event was created. what type of environment used to be in that location millions of years ago. what type of rocks does the "Bufadora" have ? how was that fracture created? is it dangerous to be there? I basically need to do a research of that place. Any type of Geological fact or geological event related to this Place!!
Explanation / Answer
La Bufadora is a marine geyser located in Ensenada, on the Punta Banda Peninsula in Baja California, Mexico. The sea water spout gushes upwards due to air pressure blow trapped in sea cave formed by fault fracture. Air is forced into cave by sea water and when sea wave enters the cave the air forces the water as geyser more than 15 m height with thunderous noise. This action repeated for every minutes or so and hight of geyser depends on strength of the waves.
The marine geyser area is traversed by La Bufadora and Agua Blanca fault in Alisitos Formation contains marine terraces. The area also have Santiago volcanic rocks in north Baja California. Aqua Blanca fault is a strike slip fault with scraps and off-setting of stream features. Along the highway from Ensenada to south occupied by marine terraces, rhyolite and dacite pyroclastic hills in a syncline plunging to the west. It is almost 2400 m thick section of lowermost part of Alisitos Formation. At Punta Banda the fault is of vertical main trace with minor branches. Punta Banda is peninsula from land into the the Pacific ocean. The main fault rocks and peninsula are of Alisitos Formation consists of sandstones and conglomerates. At La Bufadora is a marine geyser caves area the formation is Alisitos sandstone and conglomerate formations consists of La Bufadora and Agua Blanca fault associated fractures. The area contains mostly Cretaceous sediments with some overlying Quaternary sediments at places.
The La Bufadora and Agua Blanca fault is a active faults created fractures at the marine cave geyser. In this area marine Pacific Plate subducting below North America Continental Plate due to which the presence of volcanic rocks of Cretaceous age are present. The Alisitis sandstone and conglomerate sediments of Cretaceous to Quaternary periods are exposed in the area. Uplifting of Alisitos sediments formed hills associated with faults and fractures.
It is not at all dangerous to be there. Because the faults and fractures formed as a natural phenomena taking millions of years. Nothing will happen suddenly. So it is safe to go there and study/research the area.
The area is associated with plate tectonism. Subduction and convergence taking place between Pacific marine plate and America Continental Plates. Generally in such convergence and subduction plate tectonic areas volcanic activity takes place.
