Geography Surface Map Questions

1.Describe the direction (up or down) and location of vertical motion of upper air with respect to the surface warm and cold fronts.

2. How does the area of warm-air advection help to explain the precipitation pattern found on the November 10, 1200z surface map? (Figure 4)

3. Carefully transfer the 0oC isotherm from Figure 3 onto Figure 4. Does the 0oC isotherm conform to the rain-snow boundary seen on the surface map? (Fig.3/4)

Is anyone able to understand these 3 questions? I'm really confused other then that I drew the 0 degrees celsius mark on the firgure 4. Please help, your time is appreciated at this critical time!

l. On Figure 3 Figure the warm the warm and cold fronts as shown on Figure 4. Next, circle and label areas of warm-air and cold-air advection on the November 10, 1200z 850-mb map. Explanation / Answer

a. The front which is located above is a warm front whereas the front which is located below is the cold front. A warm front is that in which the advancing warm air masses are replacing the colder air. The direction of the air in the warmfront is southeast to northwest. The air behind the warm front will be colder than the air which is ahead of it. Similarly the cold front air is that in which the receding air is cold and the advancing air is warm. The movement of air is from southwest to northwest.

b. The semicircle in the warm front indicates the direction of cold air. This warm air is maritime tropical air mass. In the cold front air the solid triangles point toward the direction of warmer air. The cold air mass is the maritime polar air mass. When both these air masses air masses converge they will give precipitation in the area because for precipitation the convergence of air and the air should be humid. Since in both these air masses are coming from the ocean so they carry a lot of moisture and hence conducive to precipitation.

c. Since the 0 degree isotherm is the temperature of the maritime polar air mass. At this 0 degree temperature also the ice forms. So this degree isotherm also coincides with the rain snow boundary.
