Question

Mountains near coastal regions tend to generate a cloudy and rainy weather. Considering the location of the Cascades and your deep knowledge of phase behavior and multiphase mixtures, explain the causes for the typical weather in Seattle.

Using that same knowledge, explain why it is common for people to feel their lips/skin dry during the winter months in Minnesota.

Explanation / Answer

1. Seattle Weather

Seattle being a coastal city is the suitable place to get the rain. This is because the fact the evaporation takes place over the Pacific Ocean and the resultant clouds pass over Seattle owing to the weather pattern. The Olympics lies to the northwest of Seattle. The prominent wind current affecting Seattle is westerlies. These move from pacific towards Seattle, however while passing over Olympics these experience condensation of the air and squeezing of the moisture from it.

This condensation and squeezing of moisture from the air as it rises over the mountains led to raining of the windward side of the hills. The air as it moves towards Seattle is devoid of any moisture and starts sinking as it becomes drier due to interaction with warmer air near surface.

This air again started loaded with moisture as it moves towards cascades, which lies to southeast and as the air lifts it rains towards the windward side.

2. Dry Skin in Minnesota:

Dry skin may be caused by the dry air in winter months. With reference to Minnesota, it get cold arctic winds as it lacks and natural barrier. This results in very chilly winter with dry air. The dry and cold weather affects our skin as due to temperature variation the moisture evaporates from skin/lip very quickly. Thus resulting in dry skin and lips.
